How many children do you have?

I have one beautiful and amazing 17-month old daughter (Rose) and I have 2 handsome and caring stepsons (14.5 and 11.5).

Explain/describe one of your proudest mom moments recently.

This is harder to answer than I thought! I would say guiding our children through life every day is my proudest moment as a mom/stepmom.

I still can’t get over the fact that I created life. I look at my daughter and my mind is blown that I was given the gift of being able to make her. Life is truly a miracle and I fully understand that now.

I have also been given the gift to love and guide children who I didn’t build from scratch. I am seeing little bits of me showing through in the boys and feel so blessed to be able to join them and their parents on the journey of guiding them through life.

What do you like best about your job?

I am on the sales team at a promotional marketing company. I love helping other companies build their brands and expand
their name. Plus, I basically get to shop all day and that is super fun! Growing the business is challenging and really drives me to be the best that I can be!

What's the hardest part of being a working mom?

The constant rush. In the mornings, I am rushing around the house trying to get both my daughter and myself ready for the day. Busy all day at work and then I fly out to get my daughter. We have one hour together by the time we get home, then bath and bed. Whew. Weekends are just as crazy because we are cramming in classes and activities. GO, GO, GO! Don’t get me wrong, we play, read, snuggle and we enjoy each other. I just wish we could make more time for that…but…that is just not the life of a working mom!

What came as the biggest surprise so far in motherhood?

How fast time flies!!! Ladies, like yesterday I had a little baby who fit nicely in one arm or in a front carrier. I blinked and she is 25 pounds, in 18 month clothes, running (literally) all over the place, saying 3-4 word sentences and having awesome opinions about life. Like…what?!?!? I am afraid to blink again, ha-ha. It is crazy how fast time has gone and how quickly she has changed. Biggest surprise by far.

What’s been the biggest challenge for you so far in motherhood?

I didn’t think being a mom would be easy, but I didn’t think it would be so hard either. My biggest struggle is not feeling
good enough. Am I doing this right? Am I enough for the kids, for my partner? The house is a mess, dinner is boxed mac
and cheese...again, there is laundry to be done and lunches to unpack. I should probably wash my hair soon.
All this crazy crosses my mind more often then I’d care to admit. I didn’t think motherhood would be so hard mentally. But it is. I remind myself daily (and so does my love) that I am enough. The mess will be there tomorrow. The kids love mac and cheese. Breathe.

Any words of advice for other working moms, especially those that are newer working moms?

Moms, take full advantage of Working Moms of Milwaukee and any other parent/mom group that you feel comfortable with. Being a parent is hard…like really hard. It really does take a village. So find your village. Let us here at WMM be part of your village. You are not alone.

Also, don’t be afraid to find you. You are different now, but still the same. It is a weird and hard balance. I am on the path of self-discovery (again…sigh) because being a mom has changed me. In a good way, in a difficult way, but nonetheless changed me. It is ok to take mom time. To need to walk away from the kids, from the house, from your partner and to just BE YOU. I am a firm believer in the saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. One thing I have struggled with is feeling ok with needing to not
be a mom for a few hours. And it is 100% OK!

Favorite MKE restaurant/store/hangout?

MKE in general is my favorite, duh. LOL. Food, Carrot Bomb Catering is my favorite. Organic, restaurant quality food that I
can take home and heat up at a decent cost (and no need for a sitter, plus kid approved) …yum and yes please (owned and run by a working mom)!

Favorite date spot, any place with beer. Yep, I said it.

Favorite activity, music class with my kiddo (WI Conservatory of Music), taking walks and going for a run! I also love 5k’s and do one a month with a group of amazing friends. I love that our city supports that.

What makes your family unique?

What doesn’t make my family unique? The fact that we are all over the city and yet find time to connect is the most unique
part about my family. Due to some unique family situations, we are not able to all live under one roof. So, my oldest stepson lives with his dad (my partner for life). My youngest stepson lives with his mom and her husband. My daughter lives with me and we live with my mom while I am saving to buy a house. My daughter sees her dad weekdays, as he is a nurse and works only weekends (so amazing on so many levels) and in the afternoon she goes over to his mother’s house until I get off work.

Remember when I mentioned earlier about the GO, GO, GO in our lives…yep…this is a big part of why that is. Somehow through all of this we see each other. Not as much as we would like…not as long as we would like. But we see each other. And those moments together are precious.

What (in your opinion) is Milwaukee's biggest opportunity to improve the lives of working moms and better support them?

Moms.

Moms are the biggest opportunity our city has to improve the lives of working moms. Groups like this are the best support for moms to help change the expectations that are put onto working moms. We are our own voice. And we need to take the action to improve. Maybe not for us, but for our daughters and our sons. I see that happening through this group and I know it will happen more and more. I am so excited to be part of this. It lights a fire inside me!

Are you going to have any New Year’s resolutions this year?

I am not normally a resolution kind of girl…but yes…oh yes…I have all the resolutions this year. 2019 is my year to become the best version of me! From working out, to eating healthier, to meditation and trying to be more positive about the gifts in my life, to financial goals and striving to be the best me in the workplace. My list of 2019 goals is long and I am so excited to tackle it!
